Forget the Masters. Forget the Open. Hell, forget the Ryder Cup. The most anticipated golf event of this year is the release of Happy Gilmore 2.

The much-anticipated sequel to the 1996 comedy will be released on Netflix on July 25.

Green-lit last spring, the movie sees Adam Sandler reprise his role as the titular Happy, the big-swinging, short-tempered tour pro with a heart of gold.

We also know that Christopher McDonald will return as Gilmore’s arch-rival Shooter McGavin whilst Julie Bowen, now a huge TV star after the phenomenal success of Modern Family, is back as love interest Virginia Venit.

Beyond that, however, details about the movie have been kept a closely-guarded secret.

Until now.

• The cast of Happy Gilmore: Where are they now?

The first long-form trailer for Happy Gilmore 2 dropped earlier today, giving a glimpse at what fans can expect.

The big takeaway? There are LOADS of cameos.

The 93-second clip opens with a gold jacket-wearing Gilmore declaring that “I haven’t swung a club in years”, and adding that he’s “real intimidated, all these guys hit it so big now.”

Those “guys” include Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau.

It turns out that he’s confiding in fellow big-hitter John Daly.

“I don’t know where to start,” he adds.

“Come on, brother,” replies Daly. “Grip it and rip it.”

There follows a montage which includes a wide shot showing Happy hitting shots on a beach – a tribute, perhaps, to the late Seve Ballesteros, who famously learned to play the game on the sand at Pedrena?

We also get a first look at Ben Stiller’s evil orderly “Hal”, who appears to bump into Happy at a group therapy class – an anger management session, maybe.

Golf influencer and media personality Paige Spiranac also cameos as an employee at Dick’s Sporting Goods, where she appears to be in charge of a simulator… which Happy promptly destroys with one of his trademark big hits in front of a huge catching crowd.]

The trailer was shared on social media by Sandler, who has previously said that the film will be “funny as hell”.

“The movie itself just picks up an older guy who’s not played golf a long time,” he said. “And some stuff has gone on in his life. He’s a little different. He’s a bit of a mess. And then we just try to get him cooking again.”

Other famous faces set to appear include NFL star (and boyfriend of Taylor Swift) Travis Kelce and rap icon Eminem.
