An online community of golf and cryptocurrency enthusiasts have decided to bid to purchase Spey Bay.

LinksDAO, who describe themselves as “a global community of golf enthusiasts in web3 reimagining the modern golf and leisure club,” voted last month on a motion to buy the facilities at Spey Bay.

From 4,300 votes, 3,800 were in favour of bidding to buy the course which was put up for sale earlier this year.

• Fitzpatrick wouldn’t let LIV players back

“In our search for our first golf course to purchase, we have identified a promising property in Scotland called Spey Bay Golf Club,” the organiser of the vote explained on their online forum.

“This vote is to determine if we should move forward with submitting an offer and working to purchase the course.”

LinksDAO members already have access to several courses in the USA. They say they are intent on purchasing clubs in America, but that when they saw the opportunity to purchase Spey Bay, it was too good not to pursue.

They added that the choice to go ahead with purchasing Spey Bay wouldn’t impact their other plans to buy courses in the USA.

“Even a price of triple the “guide price” would be cheaper than most mediocre courses we have assessed thus far in the US,” said the group’s proposal to members.

LinksDAO sold over 9,000 memberships in their first day, which raised in the region of $11,000,000.

Spey Bay, which is located at the mouth of the River Spey in Fochabers, is home to an 18-hole links course and clubhouse, plus a former range building and a campaign / caravan site. It’s these facilities, not the club itself, which the group are looking to purchase. It was put up for sale last month with a guide price of offers in excess of £750,000.

Neil Calder, a partner in the Inverness office of Shepherd Chartered Surveyors, said at the time it went up for sale: “This is a fantastic opportunity to own a true links golf course in a stunning location,”

“There are various avenues that new owners could explore to enhance the existing business including development potential, subject to appropriate planning consents.”

Spey Bay, a Ben Sayers design, opened in 1907. It could now be set for a very different future.
