“They didn’t have a jacket to fit me for the ceremony”

WHAT: Putting on the Green Jacket
WHERE: Augusta National
WHEN: Apr ’91

“The Green Jacket has so much meaning within golf. It represents the exclusiveness of Augusta National, the first major of the year, and you look at a golfer wearing it and instantly know: that’s a Masters champion. The thing with Augusta is that everyone knows the golf course. It’s on TV every year, it looks sensational, and I think golf fans identify with it. It was funny, you might not be able to tell from the pictures, but they couldn’t get a jacket to fit me for the prize-giving. I don’t think they thought I was going to win so they went and asked their media guy, who was a similar size to me, if we could use his for the formal part of the proceedings, which was a bit of an insult, but there you go. I got my own eventually, though, which stays in my locker at the club.”
