7th
Askernish
Par 4, 410 yards
We say: A simply breathtaking hole, hidden away on a recently-restored Old Tom Morris course on the Outer Hebrides, the seventh at Askernish provides sumptuous Atlantic views as well as an immense challenge from tee to green. It’s not S.I. 1 for nothing!
8th
Royal Troon
Par 3, 123 yards
We say: The shortest hole on the Open rota and possibly the most famous, too, there is little to be said about the ‘Postage Stamp’ that hasn’t already been said. Don’t be fooled by its length; it packs plenty of punch.
9th
Cruden Bay
Par 4, 462 yards
We say: This hole deserves to be on this list for the view alone. The tee is perched high up on a dune offering sweeping vistas of the course. It makes the steep climb from the eighth green well worth the effort!
10th
Trump Turnberry (Ailsa)
Par 5, 565 yards
We say: Modified a few years ago by esteemed architect Martin Hawtree, the tenth now makes far better use of its land and surrounding features. From the tips, you tee off from beside the famous Turnberry lighthouse and over rocks below. It’s a stunner.
11th
Downfield
Par 5, 498 yards
We say: Widely regarded as one of the best inland courses in the country – and for good reason! Its long 11th is a true gem. Beautifully framed by mature trees, it has a large water feature in front of the green. Are you brave enough to go for it in two?
12th
Hopeman
Par 3, 150 yards
We say: Perhaps the most underrated hole in Scottish golf, ‘The Prieshach’ is a beaut. It features a 100-foot drop from tee to green, with trouble all around. Choose your club wisely!
