US Presidents Cup captain Jim Furyk hopes his side can use international celebrations as fuel to retake the lead on Saturday.

After sweeping Thursday’s fourball session, the heavy favourites fell to a sweep of their own at the hands of a revitalised international team.

Furyk, 54, watched Si Woo Kim complete the Friday rout on the 18th hole at Royal Montreal, which sparked wild celebrations on the green.

And the former US Open champ is hopeful it ‘sticks’ with his men ahead of day three in Canada.

“We’re gonna have to get ready for tomorrow, we’ve got a tough match on our hands,” he told Golf Channel’s Damon Hack.

“I think they’re well aware of the challenge. We got to watch them jump about on the green and celebrate.

“I hope that sticks with everyone, I hope it’s a pit in their stomach tonight.

“We’ll regroup and get some good pairings out there in the morning and it’s our turn to come out firing.”

On a day virtually no one saw coming, it was world No.1 Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley who came closest to getting on the board.

Byeong Hun An left Kim with a 15-foot nerve shredder to seal the win, and the South Korean obliged after it looked like the match might slip out of their grasp.

Jason Day and Christiaan Bezuidenhout also won their match on the final hole, while the US were blown away in the other three matches.

A 7&6 win for Hideki Matsuyama and Sungjae Im over Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele tied the biggest margin of victory in the history of the contest.

The Canadian pairing of Mackenzie Hughes and Corey Conners beat Wyndham Clark and Tony Finau 6&5, while Adam Scott and Taylor Pendrith beat Sahith Theegala and Collin Morikawa 5&4.

Scott is now the highest international points scorer of all time (22).

The dominant display was recognised by Furyk, though, tipping his hat to the home side.

“I said it last night, their backs against the wall, they have to come out firing,” he added. “They weren’t happy about what happened yesterday, and I knew we’d get a big push early.

“Usually, you see some momentum swings in this, and we weren’t able to turn the momentum today.

“When I look at the scores, it might not necessarily be about us not playing as well as we liked, they played a lot of great golf – my hat is off to them.”
