In an impassioned letter, Justin Thomas has called on his fellow PGA Tour players to provide more access to the media to improve the televised product for fans.

Thomas wrote in his impromptu letter to PGA Tour members on Tuesday that players would connect better with fans if they engage in more TV duties, including pre-round and mid-round interviews.

The two-time major champion cited a recent ‘Fan Forward’ survey carried out by Sawgrass HQ, which found that “on-course personality” was the key to engaging younger fans in the sport.

“We’re incredibly lucky to have many passionate people tuning in to watch us every week,” Thomas said, ”but let’s be honest – this game can feel a little distant at times.”

Thomas has acknowledged that he was once part of the problem.

He told reporters in 2021 that he would not wear a mic on the course, but his position has since changed drastically. Having become more involved in the PGA Tour’s Player Advisory Council, he wants players to think outside the box in order to enhance the TV spectacle.

“I know stepping out of our comfort zones isn’t always easy,” Thomas said. “Believe me, in the past I’ve been the first to say no before things are even done being asked.

“I’ve had no interest when someone asks for an interview mid-round or suggest trying something new. But I also know how much the fans love those moments – hearing our thought processes, conversations with our caddies, our reactions to shots, and understanding the ups and downs of competing at the highest level.”

Thomas’ message comes as golf’s TV viewing figures continue to fall. The PGA Tour suffered a 19% drop on final round ratings in 2024.

“At the end of the day, we’re all owners in this Tour,” he concluded.

“So, the bigger and better we make it not only benefits us financially, it benefits our fans and creates the ability for us to do bigger things down the road.”
