Scotland’s Russell Knox continued his fantastic start to 2014 by finishing in a tie for tenth in the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines.

The Inverness-born 28-year-old pieced together rounds of 71, 67, 74 and 70 to continue the fine work he did in last week’s Humana Challenge, where he finished tied for 13th.

So far, Knox has played seven events on the new ‘wraparound’ PGA Tour season, missing only one cut in the process. That has put the young Scot in an excellent position to retain his card for next year, following his graduation from the Web.com Tour last year.

Knox, who previously played on the PGA Tour in 2012, has already earned almost $380,000 this season and is sitting 34th on the FedExCup standings. Three or four more weeks like this one and he will be able to plan ahead for next season.

Knox ultimately finished in a tie for tenth, three shots behind eventual winner Scott Stallings.

At one stage during the final round, Knox was within a shot of the lead and looked on-course to win his first PGA Tour title. Four birdies and one bogey on his front nine put the Jacksonville-based Scot in a commanding position.

However, seven pars and one bogey on the inward stretch derailed his challenge somewhat and he ultimately had to settle for a six-way share of tenth, three shots behind eventual winner Scott Stallings.

Knox’s fellow Scot Martin Laird also banked another cheque but will be disappointed not to have finished better than tied for 37th after opening with rounds of 69 and 71. Rounds of 74 and 73 undid much of that good work for the Glasgow-born man.

Knox: A winner in the making?
