Wyndham Clark has apologised after he was caught smashing his driver at the PGA Championship on Sunday.

The 31-year-old was heavily criticised on social media for the outburst which saw him fling his driver through an advertisement board.

Clark, who won the 2023 US Open, went on to finish T50 in the second men’s major of the year.

“I would like to sincerely apologise for my behaviour on the Hole 16,” he wrote in a statement on X.

“As professionals, we are expected to remain professional even when frustrated and I unfortunately let my emotions get the better of me.

“My actions were uncalled for and completely inappropriate, making it clear that I have things that I need to work on.

“I hold myself to a high standard, trying to always play for something bigger than myself, and yesterday I fell short of those standards. For that I am truly sorry.

“I promise to better the way I handle my frustrations on the course going forward, and hope you all can forgive me in due time.”

Ironically, the damaged sign behind the tee box of the 515-yard par-4 belonged to T-Mobile, one of Clark’s main sponsors.

He signed a deal with the US-based telecommunications company in April last year. It also signed six-time PGA Tour winner Max Homa to a deal last year.

Shortly after the incident, the marshal overlooking the pairing of Clark and Homa reacted on social media.

Chris Deiulio wrote on X that he was “scared to death”.

Ultimately, Clark made bogey on the hole before a pair of pars on the final two holes ended his championship with a total score of +4.

It’s his seventh consecutive major start since winning the US Open at LACC in which he has finished outside the top 30.
