Northern Irish Us Open winner leaves Callaway for a deal worth £1m a month

Northern Irish superstar Graeme McDowell has agreed a deal to endorse the Srixon brand from 2011, ending his long-time affiliation with Callaway.

The 2010 US Open champion, who was awarded an MBE in the New Years Honours List and Joint Player of the Year by the European Tour, will play Srixon irons, Cleveland wedges and the new Srixon Z-Star XV ball. He will also wear a Srixon hat and glove and carry a Srixon bag.

In a year when golfers from this side of the Atlantic dominated, McDowell rose up the world rankings to a career-best fifth, thanks to the first European US Open win in 40 years and successes in the Celtic Manor Wales Open and the Andalucia Valderrama Masters.

McDowell was also credited with delivering the Ryder Cup after defeating Hunter Mahan in the final match of the transatlantic encounter. Against all odds, he then stared down Tiger Woods in a play-off to win the season-ending Chevron World Challenge.

“I am really excited about my decision to join Srixon,” he said.

“There is a great energy amongst the team regarding my signing with them and I am looking forward to feeding off this energy going into 2011.”

The 31-year-old has also sealed new deals with MasterCard and shoe manufacturer Ecco, which – along with his current agreements with watch maker Audemars Piquet, Middle East business empire Al Naboodah, Dublin tailor Louis Copeland and private jet company Marquis Jet – will reputedly earn the Ulsterman in the region of £1m a month.

Another player who has opted to jump ship after a record-breaking season is Jim Furyk, who left Srixon to join TaylorMade after his contract expired at the end of 2010. And he’ll be joined by Colombian Camilo Villegas, who has left Cobra and will use a full bag of TaylorMade gear, a Penta TP ball and display the company’s logo on his hat and bag.
