Phil Mickelson has hinted that he may seek legal action after being accused of cheating over his use of square-grooved wedges by fellow pro Scott McCarron.

McCarron told US-based newspaper The San Francisco Chronicle that by putting the non-conforming Ping-Eye 2 wedge into use, Mickelson was “cheating”.

The new USGA ruling has outlawed square grooves from 2010 onwards in favour of a v-shaped design.

However, the Ping-Eye 2 wedges made before April 1990 remain approved for play due to a Ping lawsuit that takes precedence over new regulations.

Several pros have now resorted to playing the 20-year-old Ping wedges, including John Daly and Dean Wilson.

When questioned on McCarron’s quote, Mickelson said: “We all have our opinions on the matter and I just was publicly slandered.

“And because of that, I’ll have to let other people handle that.”

Quick to settle the issue, The USGA released a statement which said: “Because the use of pre-1990 Ping Eye 2 irons is permitted for play, public comments or criticisms characterising their use as a violation of the Rules of Golf as promulgated by the USGA are inappropriate at best.”
