Colin Montgomerie has told bunkered.co.uk that he believes Stephen Gallacher would be ‘very very very unlucky’ if he doesn’t receive a wildcard pick from Paul McGinley.

The Scot, speaking exclusively to bunkered.co.uk, also thinks Luke Donald will be the unlucky man to miss out when Paul McGinley announces his picks at 12:30pm on Tuesday.

Speaking at his golf day at The Carrick, Montgomerie said: “As a Scot, I hope that we have Scottish representation at this Ryder Cup, and that means Stephen Gallacher.

“Wildcard picks are very difficult because you’re saying I think X is better than Y, and golfers don’t always appreciate that feeling. Paul has done a great job so far, and I’m sure he’ll continue to do so and make the right choice for the team.

“It means we’ve got the strongest team and will start as favourites for the first time in a long time.” – Colin Montgomerie

“Sometimes a better golfer might not fit into the team ethic compared to someone who more flexible and can play fourball, foursomes and singles, is better in the team room and fits in better to the team scenarios than the golfer that might be better.

“I think Stephen will be very very very unlucky if he doesn’t receive a pick, and then after that, you’re looking at two from three. You’re look at Poulter, Donald and Westwood, and at this stage, you would probably go for Poulter, Gallacher and Westwood.”

Montgomerie also believes the European team that will be heading to Gleneagles at the end of this month is possibly the strongest team Europe has ever had to compete against their American counterparts.

He added: “I think this is one of the strongest European teams we’ve ever had. With Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson and Garcia back in the team. It also has the McIlroy and McDowell basis to it, Thomas Bjorn is a competitive being and then there’s Victor Dubuisson, who is the matchplay king.

“That doesn’t mean they’ll win, but it means we’ve got the strongest team and will start as favourites for the first time in a long time.”

Will Gallacher make the team?

European captain Paul McGinley will complete his line-up tomorrow (Tuesday September 2) when he announces his three wildcard picks at 12:30. Have your say on who he should pick in the ‘Comments’ section below.
