The decision by members of the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers to deny women the right to join its club has prompted a furious backlash on social media.
The news, announced this morning, was immediately met with the removal of Muirfield from the Open rota by the R&A and, as you could rightly expect, comments posted by Twitter users were broadly scathing.
English pro Gary Evans, who came within a whisker of winning the Open there in 2002, had this to say:

Former Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond – who famously boycotted the 2013 Open at Muirfield because of its ‘male only’ membership policy – couldn’t hide his disappointment, either.
