Our beloved sport will be an Olympic discipline for just the fifth time when the Games head to Paris in 2024, so winners of Olympic medals for golf are a rare breed.
After making its debut in 1900 with a men’s and women’s individual – remember, at this stage, The Open and US Open were still in their relative infancies – golf was then included in the 1904 Games with men’s individual and team events.
Golf tournaments were due to have been held in 1908 and again in 1920, but both were cancelled – the former just two days before it was due to start – due to a lack of entries.
Golf didn’t make its Olympic return until the Rio Games in 2016 with men’s and women’s individual events. That was also the case for Tokyo 2020 – which was delayed a year due to the Coronavirus outbreak – and Paris 2024.
Discussions have taken place about holding a third tournament – a mixed team event – when the Olympics return to Los Angeles in 2028.
