Starting something: Ivor Robson has been starting competitors in the Open Championship since 1975
Robson, golf’s most famous starter, receives hon. membership from club
Ivor Robson one of the most famous faces – and voices – in the world of golf, has been awarded honorary membership of Moffat Golf Club.
For five decades Robson, easily the best-known and most highly respected starter in world golf, has been a member of the 128-year-old Dumfriesshire club, including a spell as club master.
The day was a huge success and the club invited along BBC commentator Peter Alliss to present the award. “Ivor has given a tremendous amount to the game,” said Alliss. “He is a quiet and modest man and epitomises all that is good about the game of golf.”
Members past and present attended a lunch in Ivor’s honour, held in the clubhouse.
Moffat captain Douglas Smith said it was only fitting that the club showed their appreciation of a man who put the club on the map. “Ivor has given a great deal to the game, the town of Moffat and the golf club, therefore we felt it was fitting to recognise his achievements,” said Smith. “Ivor’s profile has attracted many visitors to the club from far and wide.”
Robson began his career at the 1975 Open at Carnoustie, which was won by Tom Watson. Since then, he has been the official starter at 39 Opens, Ryder Cups and many European tour events.
Legendary BBC man Alliss added: “Ivor really is a remarkable individual with a distinctive delivery. He starts work at 6.30am in all weathers, without wearing an overcoat, for hours on end and never even takes a toilet break.”
Robson said: “I’m deeply honoured to receive this award from my home club. It means a great deal to me and my wife and it was wonderful to share this special occasion with so many.”
