PAUL LAWRIE MATCH PLAY

Big names including Ryder Cup hopeful Matt Fitzpatrick and Scottish duo Marc Warren and Richie Ramsay crashed out of the Paul Lawrie Match Play in the Round of 16.

Fitzpatrick, who had won his first two matches at Archerfield Links with ease over Ryder Cup vice-captain Thomas Bjorn and Matt Ford – amassing 11 birdies and an eagle in 28 holes – came up against an inspired Alejandro Canizares.

The young Englishman went down 4&3 but was three-under-par through 15 holes with Canizares – who needed extra holes to beat Mike Lorenzo-Vera in the first round before comfortably seeing off Eduardo de la Riva – an incredible seven-under-par through 11 holes before closing it out with four pars.

“I was very pleased with the way I played,” said Canizares. “I kept it going. I never stopped pushing, and I had to play great against a guy like Matt because he doesn’t miss many shots. I was really happy in the end to beat him.”

Warren, who had earlier taken down Magnus A. Carlsson, was denied at the last by Haydn Porteous, who sunk a nervy five-footer to prevent the Scot from having a similar length putt to take their match to extra holes.

Ramsay, meanwhile, was 4DN against Oliver Fisher with five holes to play and, after bringing it back to 2DN with two to play, he succumbed with a bogey on the 17th to hand Fisher the win.

Earlier in the day, No.1 seed Chris Wood was knocked out by Brooks and tournament host Paul Lawrie was beaten at the 19th by Green.
