Footage has appeared online showing a sinkhole that has purportedly opened up on the 18th at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

A short video clip was shared on X (formerly Twitter) showing a deep hole, around a foot-and-a-half in diameter, in the middle of the finishing hole on the iconic California course.

It is not clear when the footage was filmed.

Up to six people can be seen gathering around the hole, which appears to be just under 150 yards from the green, in line with the bottom end of the huge bunker that runs up the left-hand side of the fairway.

Pebble Beach is one of the world’s most famous golf courses. Opened in 1919, it is located on the picturesque Monterey Peninsula and has hosted six editions of the US Open, most recently in 2019 when Gary Woodland won his maiden major.

It is next slated to stage the championship in 2027.

The course is also renowned as one of the world’s most expensive. As of April 1, 2024, the green fee for both resort guests and non-resort guests is $675, with non-resort guests required to pay a cart fee of $55 per person.

A caddie will set you bag an additional $155 ($210 for a double bag), with a forecaddie coming in at $52.50 per person and a set of rental clubs setting you back $115 per bag plus tax.

Sink holes are far from uncommon on golf courses. In April this year, an old coal mine caused a 200-foot deep sink hole to open up near Birley Moor golf course in Sheffield. Last year, meanwhile, huge snow melt caused a huge sink hole to open up in Aerican Fork, Utah.
