PETER ALLISS | MUIRFIELD

‘Voice of Golf’ Peter Alliss has sparked outrage with his comments in the aftermath of the Muirfield vote – saying that if women want to join they should just marry a member.

Speaking to The Telegraph, the 85-year-old went against the views of some of the world’s leading professional players on the subject, after the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers failed to achieve the two-thirds majority needed to admit women.

“The fact is if you talked to the wives of members of Muirfield they would be horrified at the prospect of being allowed to join,” he said.

“I spoke to women at Muirfield when the Open was last held there in 2013. I said: ‘Are you all crusading to be members?’ and they said: ‘No fear’. “This is nonsense. Women have always been allowed to play at Muirfield.

“I think it will be very sad if Muirfield didn’t host the Open Championship because it is one of the best courses the Open is played on. It is bullshit.”

He went on to suggest the letter sent to members was ‘probably written by a woman’. He added: “It wouldn’t surprise me if a lady sent that around. The clubhouse is full of bloody women. They love going there for nothing.”

And speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Alliss added: “The women who are there as wives of husbands, they get all the facilities. If somebody wants to join, well you’d better get married to somebody who’s a member.”

In July last year, the BBC was forced to apologise after Alliss made a sexist comment about Zach Johnson’s wife, Kim Barclay. While commentating on Johnson’s putt as he aimed to secure victory in the Open, Alliss said: “She is probably thinking – ‘if this goes in I get a new kitchen’.”

And the legendary commentator has been barracked on Twitter as a result of his comments.
