It’s PGA Championship week at Quail Hollow, but the tournament isn’t off to the best start.

Long range weather forecasts predicted a wet – and wild – start to the second men’s major championship of the year, and that’s exactly how it’s played out.

Heavy rain has dampened spirits in Charlotte, North Carolina, prompting the PGA of America to close the gates on the first practice day of the 2025 tournament.

On Sunday night, the governing body said it was “closely monitoring” the weather before it announced in a statement that “no spectators will be allowed on property today.”

Good news for players, though: the course and practice facilities remained open for them.

The rain doesn’t look like letting up today, either. According to AccuWeather, showers and a heavier thunderstorm are expected this afternoon.

Meanwhile, players and fans alike could face the same battles tomorrow, when many of the top players face the media and get to grips with the layout.

It’s expected to be mostly cloudy on Tuesday, and despite being warmer, a couple of showers and a thunderstorm are likely to follow.

It’s not all doom and gloom, however. The weather is set to pick up as the week goes on.

Humid with sunny spells is the bill for most of the four tournament days, with temperatures on Friday likely to reach as high as 30°.

Of course, the weather is never that predictable, no matter where you are, so a thunderstorm warning has been placed on Saturday, albeit only in a couple of spots.

The PGA of America’s decision comes just a month after organisers at the Masters made the same call.

On Sunday prior to tournament week, the Masters initially closed patron gates “due to expected inclement weather and safety concerns.”

Thankfully, the gods offered some reprieve and gates were soon reopened.
