With the main season now running from January to August, a new series will offer opportunities to the rank-and-file. So how does the PGA Tour FedEx Cup Fall work? And what’s on offer? Let us explain…
Following the FedEx Cup Playoffs, players ranked outside the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings will continue to compete for points in the fall – or autumn, as we call it on this side of the Atlantic.
What’s on the line?
PGA Tour playing rights. Finishing in the top 125 means exempt status for the following season’s regular, full field PGA Tour events and a place in the Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass.
There will also be 500 FedEx Cup points up for grabs, as well as around $60 million in prize money across the eight events.
All players will keep any points earned in the regular season and the FedEx St Jude Championship for the FedEx Cup Fall series, while the top 10 players on the FedEx Cup points list following the conclusion of the FedEx Cup Fall series not yet exempt for the following season’s Signature Events will qualify for the first two Signature Events following the season-opener at The Sentry. Simple!
“This,” the PGA Tour explains, “allows for trending players to emerge from the FedExCup Fall and test their skills against the game’s best.”
How do they break it down?
Firstly, players ranked 51 to 70 at the start of the FedEx Cup Fall series have already locked up their top-125 eligibility for the following season and are competing for those spots in the Signature Events.
Then, for anyone ranked 71 and below, it’s about trying to not only earn one of those 10 available “trending” spots in the Signature Events, but to finish in the top 125 of the FedEx Cup standings the end of the FedEx Cup Fall series.
Following the conclusion of the FedEx Cup Fall series, anyone ranked from 126 to 150 will receive conditional status for the following season, while anyone outside the magic 125 can also improve or regain their PGA Tour status via Q-School.
Can players who finished in the top 50 of the FedEx Cup compete in the Fall Series?
Absolutely. Though they have their top 125 eligibility and places in all of the following season’s Signature Events wrapped up, they can play in the FedEx Cup Fall series to try and win trophies, prize money, and world ranking points.
