Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler are set to team up to play Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in a made-for-TV match, according to a report in the US.

Golfweek’s Eamon Lynch says the clash between the stars of the PGA Tour and LIV Golf League will be played in Las Vegas in December and will be broadcast on TNT.

The network previously aired nine editions of The Match, which debuted in 2018 with Tiger Woods playing Phil Mickelson in a high-stakes money match, also in Vegas.

McIlroy confirmed his participation in a text message to Lynch.

“I’m thrilled to partner with Scottie in what promises to be an exciting duel against Bryson and Brooks in Vegas this December,” wrote the four-time major champion.

“This isn’t just a contest between some of golf’s major champions; it’s an event designed to energise the fans.

“We’re all here to put on a great show and contribute to a goodwill event that brings the best together again.”

Representatives for the other three players also confirmed their participation.

There is no indication that either the PGA Tour – where McIlroy and Scheffler predominantly play – and LIV Golf, the home of DeChambeau and Koepka, are involved in the event.

The timing of the contest is certainly interesting. Officially, negotiations between the PGA Tour and the Public Investment Fund of Saudia Arabia, which bankrolls LIV, are ongoing – but it appears that little in the way of meaningful progress has been since an intention to broker a peace deal was first confirmed in June 2023.

Is Rory McIlroy headed to LIV? We discussed the possibility on the latest episode of The bunkered Podcast.
