The bizarre story of Matt Kuchar’s controversial finish at the Wyndham Championship rumbles on.

Part of Kuchar’s explanation for his one-man Monday finish earlier this month in North Carolina was that he was “trying to set an example” for his younger playing partner Max Greyserman.

But PGA Tour rookie Greyserman, who had blown a four-shot lead on the back-nine as darkness descended on Sedgefield Country Club, has now admitted he was confused by Kuchar’s reasoning.

“He didn’t say anything to me, to be honest,” Greyserman revealed, speaking on a podcast with Barstool Sports’ Dan Rapaport. “I’m not really sure why he said that in his post-round press conference.”

Kuchar – who marked his ball in the 18th rough and returned the next day despite hastily teeing off on his final hole – suggested he was teaching Greyserman a lesson by calling it a day.

“I feel bad, the poor kid should have won this tournament,” the nine-time tour winner said afterwards. “By me not playing, it may show Max he had an important shot to hit.”

Greyserman agreed with Kuchar’s concerns about the dark, but didn’t seem convinced by his apparent motives after the veteran had looked like he was desperate to finish.

“We all went along our way down the [18th] fairway and I saw [the champion] Aaron Rai made birdie and so at that point I was two shots away,” he said. “I’m like ‘okay, I don’t even need to come back in the morning’. I can try to hole the shot but I can’t see anything it doesn’t matter right?

“I’m like ‘alright, let’s just finish’. I hit my shot, then look over at Kuchar and he’s in the trees and he just marked his ball, and he never said really anything.

“We just keep going and he’s like ‘yeah I’m going to come back in the morning’. I don’t really know why, he never said anything to me. Not sure why he said that in the media.

“I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt, but I think he needed TIO relief – and benefit of the doubt – it was maybe going to take him a lot of time, which is fine for him.

“But to come out and say that he was trying to do something in service to me or something like that – I thought that was pretty strange.”
