Scotland’s club golfers will be ‘scrambling’ for success this summer, after the Scottish Golf Union launched a new free-to-enter Highland event offering the opportunity to play in the Scottish Hydro Challenge Pro-Am at Spey Valley.

The ‘Highland Scramble’, initiated by the SGU as part of their new sponsorship with Scottish Hydro, provides the unique chance for SGU and SLGA club members to play alongside a leading Team Scottish Hydro Tour professional on June 19.

Building upon Scottish Hydro’s superb support for Scottish Golf and adding value to being a golf club member, the ‘Highland Scramble’ is an exciting concept that is sure to prove popular.

The fun, three-player Texas Scramble format event will give golfers at all levels the opportunity to take part, given it is open to men, women, boys and girls.

Four regional qualifiers are to take place across the Highlands in May and June, with the leading team at each event winning a team in the Scottish Hydro Challenge Pro-Am and enjoying the memorable experience of playing with an established Tour professional.

The first qualifiers both take place on May 11, one over the stunning James Braid-designed northern links of Brora and the other at picturesque Pitlochry in Highland Perthshire. A day later, the glorious setting at Fortrose & Rosemarkie near Inverness hosts the third qualifier, before Elgin stages the final event on June 2.

Participants will be joined by members of Team Scottish Hydro, who will be hosting a coaching clinic at each club then playing a ‘Beat the Pro’ Par-3 challenge with all competitors on the day.

Qualifying events are open to all members of SGU and SLGA affiliated golf clubs with a current handicap and participants must be registered with the SGU’s Centralised Database of Handicaps.

Scottish Hydro’s backing for Scottish Golf includes supporting seven professionals in Team Scottish Hydro, the Scottish Hydro Challenge, the SSE Hydro Senior Open, the SGU Junior Tour and sponsorship of the new Scottish Golf Club Card.

Jonny Petrie, sponsorship manager at Scottish Hydro, believes the ‘Highland Scramble’ is a great addition to their golf portfolio: “We are very excited to be launching this new event as part of our sponsorship of the Scottish Golf Union, connecting club golfers with our Team Scottish Hydro Challenge Tour professionals,” he said. “We are delighted to be supporting the four Highland clubs and adding further value for golf club members in Scotland.”

Ross Duncan, SGU marketing and sponsorship manager, added: “The Scottish Hydro ‘Highland Scramble’ events highlights our commitment to offering unique playing opportunities for golf club members at all levels. We have four fantastic clubs hosting the qualifying events and it will be a fantastic experience for those winning through to the pro-am and playing with a tour professional.”
