Heather Angell has been disqualified from the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship after making a scorecard error in her first round.

Angell, a teaching pro from Florida, signed an incorrect scorecard on Thursday at Field Ranch East at PGA Frisco. She returned a scorecard with a one score on a hole lower than she actually made.

While Angell made a bogey-six on the par-5 16th hole, she signed for a five.

Under Rule 3.3b, each hole score on the scorecard must be identifiable to the correct hole. Because Angell’s mistake wasn’t corrected before she reached scoring, she was disqualified.

Angell shot a 15-over 87, so was on her way to a missed cut before the DQ.

A former touring professional, Angell was voted the 2021 and 2024 South Florida PGA Southwest Teacher of the Year. She was playing in only her second Women’s PGA Championship.

Meanwhile, Thai sensation Jeeno Thitikul edged into an early lead with an impressive four-under round of 68.

Thitikul holds a one shot advantage over Minjee Lee, who opened with a 69 that included seven birdies and four bogeys.

Nelly Korda, the world No.1, is well poised at even par despite straining her neck in practice on Monday.

“It’s better,” she said afterwards. “Getting better every day, which is nice. Just because I injured it last year, whenever I do injure my neck it takes a little bit longer than normal.

“Overall I mean, even par to start the major. It was windier in the morning than I thought it would be. So it played a little tougher. I’m pretty happy with my first round in the conditions.

“It was hot. It definitely takes a toll on you, the Texas heat, so I’m happy with my position.”
