While most eyeballs were on Bay Hill for a dramatic conclusion to the Arnold Palmer Invitational, there was a breakthrough victory for a rising PGA Tour star in Puerto Rico.
The Puerto Rico Open, an opposite field event, was won by the popular young Australian Karl Vilips.
In just his fourth career start on the PGA Tour, Vilips claimed victory by three shots over Denmark’s Rasmus Neergaard-Peterssen on a 26-under par total.
Just weeks ago, 23-year-old Vilips became the first player to sign an apparel deal with Tiger Woods’ new Sun Day Red apparel brand.
Now, after an eight-under 64, the youngster is already a PGA Tour winner.
“I got on my phone after the round and I was just scrolling, like who was texting me?” Vilips said afterwards. “Then there was a voicemail saying it’s Tiger and I couldn’t like process it in the moment, I was just trying to… I’ll get back to that later. That’s pretty cool.”
