Robert MacIntyre has entered the chat.

After missing the cut in disappointing fashion at The Masters last month, the Scot has bounced back in the opening round of the PGA Championship.

He opened with a three-under 68 to lie just two shots off the early pace at Quail Hollow in the second men’s major of the year.

A bogey at the second was offset by birdies at the seventh, eighth, 14th and 15th as the Oban man put himself firmly in the mix for the Wanamaker Trophy. It’s a piece of silverware that no Scottish golfer has ever lifted but MacIntyre can change all that over the next few days.

“The work we are doing is going in the right direction and I am trusting the process,” he told Sky Sports after his round.

“It’s boring but the process is just trying to get better piece by piece. Statistically, I am better than I was last year. It doesn’t feel that way but, when you look at the bigger picture, you are getting better and that’s all you can ask for.”

MacIntyre had a superb day from tee to green, hitting 11 of his 14 fairways and gainly nearly two-and-a-half shots with his approach play.

That, admitted the two-time PGA Tour winner, has been the strength of his game so far in 2025.

“I’ve been playing absolutely superb this year tee to green and just needing that bit spark,” he added. “I didn’t get off to a great start but I kept at it.

“I think I missed two greens today out on that golf course when it is long, soft and the rough is reasonably punishing.

“The par-4s are long and, to be honest, to start a major the way I have is really pleasing.”
