Robert MacIntyre’s dad Dougie is set to take on another new role as he bids to help his son continue his incredible 2024.

The organisers of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship have announced that the MacIntyres will team up for this year’s renewal of the popular pro-am, set to take place at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns from October 3-6.

It will be a debut for Dougie who famously caddied for his lad as he won his first PGA Tour title, the RBC Canadian Open, in July.

MacIntyre has since added the Genesis Scottish Open to his CV and, having ended a 25-year wait for a home winner in that event, he’ll be going all out to become the first Scottish winner of the Alfred Dunhill Links since Colin Montgomerie in 2005.

“I’m really looking forward to playing at St Andrews,” said MacIntyre. “I can’t believe there hasn’t been a Scottish winner since 2005. It would be great if I could change that.

“I’m also incredibly thrilled to be able to play with my dad on the Old Course in the Team Championship.

“For us to play together in a proper championship at the home of golf is just amazing. It was a very special moment for us when dad was on the bag in [Canada] and we won. Now, we can see what we can do together with clubs in our hands.”

Dougie, the course manager at Glencruitten Golf Club near Oban, a short distance from the family home, has some pedigree with a different ‘club and ball’ game, having scored twice in Oban Camanachd’s victory over Kingussie in the final of shinty’s Camanachd Cup in 1996.

He is currently manager of Oban Celtic.

They go into the Alfred Dunhill Links looking to emulate Matt Fitzpatrick and his mum Sue, who became the first mother and son to win the team title last year, with Fitzpatrick also claiming the main prize.
