Battle for a Cause

Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson will go head-to-head one more time before the year is out – all in aid of charity.

Set to take place at Pradera Verde Golf and County Club in the Philippines on November 29, the exhibition match has been named ‘Battle for a Cause’ with proceeds mainly going towards relief efforts following typhoons in the country.

The event was originally supposed to involve an 18-hole match between Rory McIlroy and Jason Day with the world No.1's mother hailing from the Philippines and several go his family members killed in the 2013 typhoon.

The Australian had to pull out of his commitment recently due to ongoing back issues.

Speaking at the HSBC Champions event in Shanghai, Johnson said he gladly stepped in.

“It should be a lot of fun,” he added. “I like playing against Rory, and I’ve never been to the Philippines.”

The commitment means Johnson will give up his spot in Tiger Woods’ Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas.

McIlroy added: “It will be a cool match. I’m happy that Dustin wanted to come and take part. Obviously, it was going to be Jason, and it would have been special for him with his ties to the Philippines.

“It’s a place I’ve never been. I’ve met a lot of Filipino people along the way that are always nice and courteous and welcoming. I’m looking forward to that hospitality in Manila.”

Rory McIlroy had also been planning to play in an exhibition match against Rickie Fowler in Detroit this summer until a deal with sponsors fell through.

Both Johnson and McIlroy have enjoyed successful seasons. The American claimed his first major title at the US Open in June, while McIlroy added two more wins on the PGA Tour en route to finishing top of the FedEx Cup standings. He also claimed his first ever Irish Open win at the K Club in May.

The pair were also on opposing sides as the USA triumphed over Europe in the Ryder Cup at Hazeltine.
