RORY MCILROY

Rory McIlroy has hit back at claims made by Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee, who said that the Northern Irishman could follow Tiger Woods’ path if he continues ‘extensive weightlifting’.

The four-time major winner’s physique has changed considerably in recent years and he frequently posts videos of himself working out in the gym, which has clearly prompty the concern of Chamblee.

“I say it with a lot of trepidation, because it’s a different era for sure,” Chamblee told the Golf Channel, “and I don’t know the full extent of what he’s doing, but when I see the things he’s doing in the gym, I think of what happened to Tiger Woods.

“And I think more than anything of what Tiger Woods did early in his career with his game was just an example of how good a human being can be, what he did towards the middle and end of his career is an example to be wary of. That’s just my opinion. And it does give me a little concern when I see the extensive weightlifting that Rory is doing in the gym.”

“Thus far,” he added, “there’s been no signs that it’s adversely affected his game.”

And when McIlroy saw the Golf Channel’s tweet, he responded with… a video of himself lifting weights in the gym, before clarifying what he was doing with the following tweet.

The 26-year-old was backed up by nine-time major winner Gary Player, who brushed off Chamblee’s comments and told McIlroy to keep doing what he was doing.
