RORY MCILROY

A new video released by Nike Golf has gone behind the scenes with Rory McIlroy to show how, in less than five years, the world No.1 has transformed his game and his body.

The 25-year-old will be heading to Augusta in two weeks’ time in pursuit of a career grand slam and puts a significant chunk of his success on the golf course in recent years down to the work he has put in in the gym.

A four-time major winner – twice at the US PGA Championship and once apiece at the Open Championship and the US Open – McIlroy revealed how much he has built on his workout routine over the past five years, which he admitted before that time was ‘not very much’.

“I couldn’t stand on one leg for more than ten seconds” – Rory McIlroy

“I had huge amounts of mobility and flexibility, that’s never been my problem, but I couldn’t stand on one leg for more than ten seconds and I couldn’t hold a plank for more than 30 seconds,” Rory McIlroy said.

Step forward Dr Steve McGregor. The exercise physiologist has been working with McIlroy since late 2010, introducing a programme of stability, strength and power, which is where this transformation began.

Over time, the pair have developed a very close working relationship, as shown in the video, and along with instructor Michael Bannon and caddie JP Fitzgerald, Rory McIlroy has strong team behind him.

He said: “Bringing Steve on board has been huge. The education he’s given me about the body combined with his great background, I feel like I learn stuff from him every day.

“If this can help me get an extra two or three years out of my career or help me get one shot a round, whether it’s because I’m more mentally focussed, more fit or more confident.

“I feel like getting in here gives me the best possible chance to go out on the golf course and perform to the best of my ability.”

Although McIlroy varies his training routine to correspond with his tournament schedule, he rarely goes too long without heading to the gym.
