Rory McIlroy shows heart at the BMW

Rory McIlroy finished his opening round at the BMW Championship on four-under-par, a plucky performance from a man with more than a few things on his mind.

“I played well and hit a lot of solid shots,” said Rory McIlroy. “The two eagles helped, obviously, and it's a good round for me around this place.

“I’ve notoriously struggled here in the past, but it was good to shoot something in the 60s, I'm looking forward to getting back out on to the golf course.”

Rory McIlroy: round one scorecard.

Doubts were cast over McIlroy’s state of mind following his much talked about split with former fiancé Caroline Wozniacki. However, he was able to focus when it mattered and carded a respectable score of 68.

Afterwards Rory McIlroy conceded the next few weeks would be difficult, but hopes that he can return to normality by focusing on his golf.
"If I can just keep my mind busy and just concentrate on my golf and gym work. I can keep myself going throughout the week."

“I don't think you'd be a human being if it wasn't tough, especially when it's a little slow out there and we were walking in between shots,” admitted Rory.

“Once I had my mind focused on the task at hand, it made it a little easier, but I knew that it was going to be a tough week for me.

“If I can just keep my mind busy and just concentrate on my golf and gym work. I can keep myself going throughout the week, then hopefully make it a bit better for myself.”

Garcia offers Rory McIlroy advice

Sergio Garcia, who has had his own relationship turbulence in the past, had offered the former world No.1 an arm around the shoulder and someone to talk to, however McIlroy has yet to hear from the Spaniard.

“No, I haven’t spoke to him,” said McIlroy. “I saw him a couple of days ago. I haven't turned on my phone for a few days and I've given my laptop away. I'm sort of living like I'm in the 70s again, 60s.”

Some questioned whether Rory McIlroy announced the news at the right time, he answered.

“It was played out in the media so much that it was probably the best way to do it, it was just a natural thing to do I guess.

“I mean, it's tough.  It's a tough week and I'm not really that comfortable standing here talking about it.”
