Rory McIlroy’s club-throwing antics during the second round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship caused a wave of reaction with opinions split on whether the world No.1’s actions should be condemned or defended.

As usual, there was a lot of activity on the bunkered website, forum and social media channels, especially after Michael McEwan’s article yesterday morning dismissing claims that the hoisting of the 3-iron made Rory McIlroy a poor role model to young golfers.

A lot of people, it has to be said, were in agreement that there had been an overreaction to the incident, with many admitting that they too, at some point during a poor round, had launched a club before sheepishly going to collect it.

But after a scuba diver was sent to retrieve the club, there were still those who thought that Rory McIlroy should have known better and that there were no excuses for his actions.

On the bunkered Facebook page, Gerry Boyle wrote: “I cannot understand the comments or reaction to Rory McIlroy throwing a club into a lake. It was the result of a guy showing a bit of emotion out on a golf course.

“The fact that television cameras caught the action speaks more about how the guy can hardly go for a toilet break without the cameras following him in to the portaloo. While not condoning his actions give the guy a break, golf would be a duller game without his undoubted talent.”

Commenting on the bunkered website, Barry Steel said: “Couldn’t agree more. Golf is a game where the mental pressures are extreme and can build up rather quickly. These guys aren’t robots they are human beings and make mistakes like everyone else so to call the game’s brightest star a bad role model is nonsense.”

However, there were also those who were against the world No.1’s actions.

Over on the bunkered forum, Vince Palmer said: “Given the fact he’s a golfing hero, I would expect a few clubs meeting the water this year. I think from my point of view – a spoilt brat and I hope his father has a good word with him.”
