RUSSELL KNOX | GRAEME MCDOWELL

Eight days after landing his breakthrough win at the WGC-HSBC Champions, Russell Knox made a 12,000-mile trip but fell agonisingly short of making it back-to-back wins as he lost out in a three-man play-off to Graeme McDowell.

Resuming the weather-delayed tournament on the 13th hole this morning, Knox birdied that hole before immediately giving a shot back on the 14th.

In some testing conditions, which can be seen in the video below, Knox impressively put his tee shot to six feet but missed the birdie putt to go two clear, and heading down the 18th, with the Scot one shot clear of his two closest rivals McDowell and Jason Bohn, he found a fairway bunker down the left side and was unable to make it up and down for par.

For 2010 US Open champion McDowell in the group ahead, it was a reprieve after believing he’d finished one short, and he took full advantage with his second shot on the first play-off hole, sticking his approach to within three feet while Knox missed the green to the left.

With Knox and Bohn both missing their birdie attempts, McDowell wrapped it up for his first win since the 2014 French Open and one which will give him a handy boost up the world rankings after falling from No.15 to No.85 since the start of 2015.
