• Final US Ryder Cup spot looks to have been narrowed down
• Bubba, Thomas and Berger were at Hazeltine yesterday
• Watson is the odds-on favourite to be the 12th man on Sunday

RYDER CUP | TEAM USA

Has the 12th and final spot for the US Ryder Cup team been narrowed down to just three players?

If the goings-on at Hazeltine yesterday were anything to go by, it would seem so.

Ahead of this week’s Tour Championship, nine Americans made a quick visit to the midwest, but only six of them – Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler, Brandt Snedeker, Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka and Jimmy Walker – are actually on the team.

The three other players on-site and looking to impress Davis Love III and his vice-captains Jim Furyk and Steve Stricker were Bubba Watson, Justin Thomas and Daniel Berger.

Watson (4/7 with SportingBet) is the odds-on favourite to be included after he was surprisingly overlooked for a captain’s pick last week in favour of Fowler, Matt Kuchar and J.B. Holmes.

The world No.7 hasn’t been at his best for a number of months after an initially strong start to 2016 and, should he be selected, it would mean the top 12 players in the final Ryder Cup standings are on the American team. He does, however, have a poor record of 3-8-0.

With Koepka currently the only rookie in the US team, selecting either Berger (9/2) or Thomas (11/2) wouldn’t seem like such a wild move – but would Love be willing to risk the fallout from not selecting Watson just five days before the start of the match?

Either way, the Tour Championship is likely to have some bearing on that final spot, where all three will be looking to do their utmost to impress Love and his backroom team.
