A bright new era could soon beckon for a cherished Scottish golf course that once appeared to be doomed.

Dalmuir Golf Course – the popular municipal venue on the outskirts of Glasgow – has faced an uncertain future for many months due to cuts made by the West Dunbartonshire Council.

The council opted to axe funding for Dalmuir in March, but the golf community surrounding the Clydebank course has now come together to take matters into their own hands.

As first reported by the Clydebank Post, Radnor Park, Overtoun and Kilbowie golf clubs and the Clydebank Seniors are making a joint bid to transfer the muni and its assets into their new trust.

And a special meeting will be held on Wednesday over the group’s plans to lease the course from the council for an initial rent of £1 for a period of three years.

It’s understood that a meeting will take place at 5pm on June 4 after the proposal for the club’s course, clubhouse and shop was submitted to the council’s Infrastructure, Regeneration and Economic Development Committee.

If approved by the council, the new trust could in charge of the course from as soon as July, 1.

The move would be significant after a campaign to save Dalmuir that reached far and wide this spring.

Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Rose, Paul McGinley, Robert MacIntyre and Paul Lawrie were among those speaking out on Dalmuir’s behalf.

“Sometimes people don’t realise the impact of what golf can be and what it is for a community, whether it’s character development, personal growth, learning more about yourself, or family development in general,” DeChambeau said in March.

“I think it’s important for people to understand that if you don’t have golf courses like like Dalmuir and a community like Dalmuir, it’s difficult to continue to grow not only just a sport, but just a community.

“I know it’s super important, and I hope that people can understand how important it is to go out and sign that petition, keep this golf course alive, keep it in existence, for everybody’s sake and to make a different future for your generations to come.”
