Members of Caird Park golf course in Dundee have held talks with a potential investor to save it from closure at the eleventh hour.

The city’s only remaining council-run golf course is set to shut in April, as Dundee Council looks to plug a £500,000 hole in its finances.

It voted to shut Caird Park’s 18- and nine-hole courses last month, although the move was met with fierce opposition among golfers.

But, as reported by STV, the club has met with a potential investor – Andrew Mair of Golf Design International – who will table plans next week.

“As a young lad, I used to stay with a great aunt in Monifieth, so I’ve had a fondness from a young age for this area,” he said.

“I’m a great believer in golf for all so that’s what got me thinking about what could be done to try and keep this golf course running.”

It comes after The Courier reported in December that an unnamed golf management firm was working on an ambitious proposal to keep the venue open beyond its April closure date.

With such little time until the new season begins, members are now asking the city council to defer its decision and allow Caird Park to explore the potential investment opportunity.

“We’ve only got eight or nine weeks until the official start of the summer season and that is not enough time to get this deal done,” said Ian Gordon, the club’s captain.

“Discussions have gone well – we’ve put through our ideas, they’ve got ideas – but time is going to be of the essence.”

A spokesperson for Dundee City Council told STV: “We welcome approaches from any party that is interested in exploring the future use of Caird Park Golf Course.

“Any parties that may wish to explore a future use are invited to submit proposals for consideration.”

Meanwhile, The Courier also recently revealed that Dundee leisure chiefs spent only £500 in three years to promote the under fire golf courses.

After nearly £16,000 was spent between 2013 and 2021, figures showed that nothing was spent on other promotional activity since.

Leisure and Culture Dundee also cut the number of posts on its Golf Dundee social media pages by almost 90% in the short period of time.
