A golf club in Scotland has issued an odd – albeit very important – message to members and visitors alike.

Pumpherston, located in West Lothian, near capital city Edinburgh, is urging those playing there in the coming days and weeks to resist eating the MUSHROOMS that have sprouted up on the course recently.

In a post on social media, the club – affectionately known as ‘Royal Pumphy’ amongst members and locals – shared a picture of the fungi alongside a warning.

“The mushrooms are looking fantastic in places around the course at the moment,” read the Facebook update.

“Please do not pick them. We have no idea whether they’re edible or not, so it’s best to assume they’re not edible.”

Responding to the update, one person said that the mushrooms were honey fungus and “edible if properly cooked.”

Mushrooms on golf courses – the advice!

It’s no surprise that mushrooms sprout up on some golf courses. But are they edible?

The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America has this advice:

“Although golf courses are often a good place to spot mushrooms, do not eat these fungi without consulting the spray log.

“Unless you’re certain that no herbicide, fungicide or insecticide residue is on the mushrooms, it’s unwise to consume a golf course mushroom.”

• Are golf clubs making full use of their clubhouses? Could they do more with these premises to attract new members and additional revenue? That was the subject of discussion on the most recent episode of the multi award-winning bunkered Podcast. Listen in full here. New episodes are available to stream and download for free every single week.
