A popular golf club in Scotland hopes the construction of up to 650 new homes on its land will help preserve its long-term future.

While more golf courses face closure in the sport’s spiritual home, there is also a housing crisis and a proposal to build a new neighbourhood on course is being supported in North Lanarkshire.

Dullatur Golf Club and developer Hallam Land have joined forces in plans to “address the spiralling demand for private and affordable homes within the area.”

• Top Scottish golf club freezes out new members

Crucially for golfers, the developers have insisted that the investment will “future-proof Dullatur Golf Club, ensuring it remains an attractive destination for members and the wider community”.

The club’s 18-hole Carrickstone layout would remain, with nine holes of its shorter Antonine course sold to accommodate the new housing.

Along with the hundreds of homes in Cumbernauld – a quarter of which will be affordable – the proposal also addresses community needs with a new GP service, play areas, sports pitches and parkland.

The plans will be put to North Lanarkshire Council on November 27.

And there appears to be overwhelming support from the members at Dullatur, a venue that has long been a pillar of the community.

• “Our golf club is thriving. Here are seven ways we did it.”

• Alarming numbers reveal new threat to golf courses

“We are incredibly proud of our heritage and the community we have fostered within the Club, which has been helped by recent investment,” Dullatur’s vice-captain Frankie Bannachan said.

“However, critical to our continued success now and for generations to come is continuing this momentum.

“The majority of our members are very supportive of plans as they recognise the potential it offers the Club to introduce new facilities and remain an attractive destination.”

In light of these proposals, bunkered.co.uk has reached out to Dullatur about future plans for both it’s courses.
