• First unified Scottish Golf national squad announced
• Walker Cup-winning trio all in Men’s squad
• Women’s squad features seven US-based players

SCOTTISH GOLF

The first unified Scottish Golf national squad has been announced with Walker Cup-winning trio Ewen Ferguson, Grant Forrest and Jack McDonald all included, along with rising US college star Jessica Meek.

Recently named Scotland’s Amateur Golfer of the Year, Ferguson makes up a strong Men’s squad which, along with Forrest and McDonald, features Connor Syme and Greig Marchbank, all of whom were part of the European Amateur Team Championship success in Sweden in July.

Also included are career amateurs Barry Hume and Matthew Clark, as well as former Boys Order of Merit winner Calum Fyfe, who helped GB&I retain the Jacques Leglise Trophy. Sandy Scott, a three-time winner in 2015 who also represented GB&I at Royal Dornoch alongside Fyfe, is in the Boys squad, as is Scottish Boys champion Will Porter.

The Women’s squad features seven US-based players, including Meek, who recently won her maiden US college title in record-breaking fashion in Missouri. Clara Young, the 2015 Scottish Ladies champion and former GB&I cap, is also in the group, with Shannon McWilliam, one of the youngest ever winners of the Ladies Order of Merit in 2015, included in the Girls squad.

“I’m excited for the future” – Steve Paulding

“I’m excited for the future, having amalgamated Scottish Golf national squads for the first time,” said Steve Paulding, Scottish Golf performance manager. “On paper, we have a strong Men’s group who will look to continue their progress, while we have focused the Women’s squads to try to raise performance.”

The make-up of the squads reflects the continued success of the Scottish Golf Academy, the national development programme for Scotland’s talented young golfers that was launched in 2005. For 2015-16, 83% of the players within the national squads have developed through the Scottish Golf Academy.
