Sergio Garcia says he would refuse a captain’s pick for the European Ryder Cup if offered one right now.

Garcia, the record point-scorer in the history of the biennial dust-up, has been widely touted for a place on Luke Donald’s team for this year’s clash at Bethpage.

The Spaniard capped a strong start to the year with a victory in LIV Golf’s Hong Kong event in March.

However, after missing the cut at The Masters and struggling at this week’s PGA Championship, the 45-year-old insisted that he wouldn’t be an asset to the team on current form.

“The way I’m playing, even if Luke offered me a pick right now, I would tell him no,” he told reporters after signing off at Quail Hollow with a final round 69.

“Obviously, I need to get better. I need to get more where I was just before the Masters. You know, just show myself and show everyone that my game is solid, and it can help Team Europe. It’s as simple as that.

“The good thing is that there’s still, you know, two or three months until the team is finalised. So, I’ll have time to gain some confidence and improve a little bit on my game.”

Asked to reflect on his week’s work, Garcia pulled no punches.

“Positives, obviously making the cut. Being here for the weekend. Not finishing last on Sunday.

“But other than that, not a lot more. Too many terrible shots.”

A veteran of ten Ryder Cups, Garcia made his debut in the match in 1999 and went on to secure a total of 28.5 points.

His most recent appearance came in the loss at Whistling Straits in 2021.
