Sergio Garcia said there is ‘no monkey on his back’ as he heads into the final day of the US Open with an excellent chance of earning his first major title.
The Spaniard is currently sitting three shots behind leader Shane Lowry with four holes of his third round left to finish after play was suspended at 8.49pm (1.49am local time) due to darkness.
And, at the summit of a leaderboard which includes a host of other majorless big names – including Lowry, Dustin Johnson, Lee Westwood and Branden Grace – Garcia says there’s no added pressure on him heading into the final round at Oakmont.

“No, there’s no monkeys – that’s nonsense,” said Sergio Garcia. “At the end of the day, the only thing I can do is give myself chances. Play well. And if it happens, it happens.
“I don’t know, you know. I will only know the day that it happens. So it is easy for me to stand here and tell you it will mean this or that, but until it happens, you never know. But I’m happy with the way I managed and I’m excited about tomorrow.”
