Sergio Garcia is a man on a mission – and that mission is making Luke Donald’s European team for this year’s Ryder Cup match in New York.

The Spaniard is the event’s all-time record points-scorer, racking up an impressive 28.5 points across ten appearances in the biennial dust-up.

The most recent of those came in 2021. He missed out on the clash completely two years ago following his move to LIV Golf in the summer of 2022, at which point it appeared as though his relationship with the match was over.

However, following a cooling of tensions – which has included Garcia settling fines owed to the DP World Tour for his defection to the Saudi-funded league – the 45-year-old finds himself back in the Ryder Cup reckoning.

It’s an opportunity he appears to be grabbing with both hands, too. Victory today in LIV Golf Hong Kong gave the Spaniard his second win in his last eight starts worldwide.

The manner of it was no less impressive, a final round 63 sealing a three-stroke triumph.

It’s undoubtedly good form to take into his landmark 100th major appearance at Augusta National next month, and speaking to reporters afterwards he revealed that he has been in contact with European skipper Donald about his Bethpage prospects.

“I think he’s watching,” said Garcia. “We’ve been in touch, so I know that he’s keeping an eye. The only thing I can do is keep playing good golf.

“I just want to help the European team like I’ve tried to do every single time I’ve been a member of that team.

“Hopefully he will think I’m good enough for it.”

Speaking about his upcoming major milestone at The Masters, he added: “It’s a milestone that not a lot of people get to achieve, so I’m super proud, super happy, and I can’t wait to go there and just enjoy it.

“Whatever happens happens, but I’m just going to try to enjoy the week as much as possible and then hopefully my game will show up.”
