Sergio Garcia has given the USGA a nudge to extend him an invitation to this year’s US Open.

The Spaniard was in Final Qualifying for the third major championship of the year on Monday but missed out on securing a place at Oakmont by one shot.

It means Garcia, Europe’s leading Ryder Cup points scorer, will likely miss the event for the first time since 1999.

After the near miss, he broke his silence on social media and said he would need a ‘miracle’ to extend his streak.

“Unfortunately, after failing to qualify on Monday by one shot, looks like my run of 25 consecutive US Open Championships might come to an end this year, unless a little miracle happens,” Garcia wrote.

“Very proud of this amazing run that I had at this great major!”

Garcia was among several big names who didn’t make it past the 36-hole qualifiers that took place in the US, Japan and England.

The 45-year-old dusted himself off from a poor PGA Championship showing to tee it up at Bent Tree Country Club, in Dallas, Texas.

But a three-putt par on the final hole of his second round meant Garcia finished on six-under-par and outside of the seven-for-one play-off that followed.

Eugenio Lopez Chacarra, Cameron Champ, Austin Eckroat, Abraham Ancer, Joel Dahmen, Branden Grace and Talor Gooch all failed to qualify at the site, too.

Garcia finished T67 at Quail Hollow the week before and, despite making the cut, took aim at his own game.

In fact, he claimed he was playing so poorly that if European Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald offered him a captain’s pick, Garcia would turn it down.

“The way I’m playing, even if Luke offered me a pick right now, I would tell him no,” he said after signing off with a final round 69.

“Obviously, I need to get better. I need to get more where I was just before the Masters. You know, just show myself and show everyone that my game is solid, and it can help Team Europe. It’s as simple as that.

“The good thing is that there’s still, you know, two or three months until the team is finalised. So, I’ll have time to gain some confidence and improve a little bit on my game.”
