Filming is underway on a new movie about the late Spanish golf legend Seve Ballesteros.

“Seve” tells the story of the early years of the man who went on to win five major championships and change the face of golf in Europe. The movie is a British-Spanish co-production written by Tom Hodgson and produced by The Renaissance Films and Fishcorb Films, in collaboration with Palamont Pictures.

The role of Seve Ballesteros himself is being played by 15-year-old Jose Luis Gutierrez. A member of the Cantabrian golf team, Gutierrez is a former runner-up in the Spanish Amateur Championship and started playing golf when he was six.

“I went to the casting thinking it would be impossible to get the role of Seve Ballesteros but a month later I received a phone call and I started screaming, I was shocked!” said Gutierrez. “It is an honour to play one of the biggest golfers of all time.”

“I thought it would be impossible to get the role of Seve Ballesteros,” said Gutierrez

The film, directed by John Paul Davidson, is being filmed in Santander, Comillas and Pedrena, where Seve Ballesteros grew up.

“This is an amazing experience, a great way to get to know Seve better, and the love he professed for his homeland,” explained Davidson, who has previously filmed a number of successful and award-winning documentaries for the BBC, and worked with Michael Palin, Stephen Fry and others in the past.

The film is tentatively scheduled for release in 2014 and one of the early images leaked from the set shows Gutierrez hitting shots on a beach – just as Seve did when he was starting out in the game.
