Shane Lowry has been selected as one of Team Ireland’s Flagbearers for the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.
The 2019 Open champion will be joined by athlete Sarah Lavin in tonight’s ceremony, which gets underway at 18.30 and is set to run for over three hours.
It usually takes place in a stadium, but for the first time, this year’s ceremony will run through the heart of Paris.
Around 300,000 spectators are expected to watch from the banks of quays of the French capital, as the parade runs along the River Seine.

“I’m not sure it’s something you’d even dream about as a kid because it’s so far out there that it’s sometimes not achievable.
“But to get to do something like that is a huge honour for me and I always wear the Irish flag with pride. To get to do something like this is something that I’ll remember forever.”

Replying to the video on X, Lowry commented: “Tonight will be special.”
It will also mark the 37-year-old as a two-time Olympian alongside Lavin – who is set to compete in the 100m hurdle.
Both competed at the 2021 Games in Tokyo, where Lowry finished in a five-man tie for 22nd place at Kasumigaseki Country Club’s East Course.
He is one of 60 players who will tee it up at Le Golf National next Thursday. A 72-hole, no-cut stroke play event will crown the latest medalists in Olympics golf.
Xander Schauffele won gold three years ago, whilst Rory Sabbatini and CT Pan completed the podium.
