Brandt values: US star Snedeker racked up his second victory of 2013 when he won the Canadian Open

Brandt bags second title of the season with three-shot win in Ontario

Brandt Snedeker racked up his second title of the season courtesy of a deserved win in the RBC Canadian Open.

The Nashville golfer carded an eventful two-under-par final round of 70 at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Ontario to finish three shots ahead of four players – Dustin Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Jason Bohn and William McGirt – in second place.

Snedeker hit the front in the tournament on Saturday afternoon when leader Hunter Mahan withdrew to attend the birth of his first child and the Tennessean – a winner of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am earlier in 2013 – held on to claim the sixth title of his PGA Tour career.

“I’m just ecstatic right now,” said Snedeker, 32, after getting his hands on the trophy. “This is a tournament I said early on in my career I wanted to win just because my caddie is actually from Canada and it’s his national open. It meant a lot to him, meant a lot to me. Third oldest tournament on Tour and it’s got some great history to it, and now to put my name on that trophy it means a lot.”

Since winning at Pebble Beach, Snedeker has struggled a little for form and consistency after an injury-enforced spell on the sidelines. However, he insists that his win in Canada means that is all behind him now.

“It feels like two completely different years for me,” he acknowledged. “First part of the year, I couldn’t do anything wrong. I was playing fantastic and then I got injured. I feel like I’ve been fighting to get myself back to the way I was at the beginning of the year. I’m not saying I’m there, but I’m close to the way I was playing in the beginning of the year.

“It feels great to get a win. To validate all the hard work I’ve put in over the past three months where I haven’t played my best and know that I’m working on the right stuff and able to hold up under some pretty serious pressure this afternoon. To win a tournament like this means a lot.”

Snedeker also joked that he would spend some of his prize money on a gift for Mahan’s newborn daughter Zoe, after he capitalised on the withdrawal of his fellow Ryder Cup star to win.

“Zoe will be getting a very nice baby gift from me,” he joked. I can’t thank Kandi enough for going into labour early. I don’t know if I’d be sitting here if she hadn’t. But that is a way more important thing than a golf tournament. I missed a golf tournament when my first was born, and it was the best decision I ever made.  I’m sure Hunter would say the same thing.”
