Plans have been unveiled by the St Andrews Links Trust to upgrade the clubhouse situated in the heart of the Home of Golf.

The St Andrews clubhouse, located just off the second fairway at the Old Course, also serves the New and Jubilees courses in the Fife haven.

It has been open since 1995, but major proposals handed to the Fife Council reveal the Links Trust’s plans to expand the venue to cope with the soaring number of visitors on these hallowed grounds.

Upgrades include a new cafe, locker and retail space, and a new roof terrace. The renovations plans come in a time where demand has never been greater to visit the Home of Golf. Last year, the Links Trust recorded revenue in excess of £40million, with more than 283,000 rounds played.

“We’re excited to unveil these plans to deliver a significantly enhanced experience at the Links Clubhouse for the benefit of all golfers and non-golfing visitors to the Home of Golf,” said St Andrews Links Trust chief executive Neil Coulson.

“The appetite and demand to play at St Andrews Links since the pandemic has been unprecedented, which has allowed us to not only fully recover financially but to begin the process of strategic reinvestment back into the site to benefit current customers as well as future generations.

“We look forward to sharing more details for reinvestment into the Links, which will include a mixture of on and off-course projects such as irrigation and coastal management.”

The Links Clubhouse is a popular hub of activity among locals and visitors to St Andrews. But approaching 30 years since it was first completed, changes are required.

In a press release, the Links Trust confirmed that the operation of the building’s mechanical and electrical infrastructure is now inefficient and needs to be replaced.

For locals or for those lucky enough to be visiting St Andrews in the coming weeks, further details of the plans are available to view in the Links Clubhouse reception area, as well as in the Eden Clubhouse and the Links Trust’s HQ at New Pilmour House.
