A Scottish golf course is facing an inspection after already feeling the effects of Storm Eowyn.

Thornhill Golf Club, in Dumfries and Galloway, will be closed until it can assess significant damage done by falling trees.

The MET Office issued a red weather warning, with winds of up to 90mph expected to hit parts of the country, as well as heavy rain and even snow.

It is believed to be the ‘most destructive’ storm in Scotland for 13 years and courses up and down the Home of Golf are bracing themselves for a rough weekend.

“Due to Storm Eowyn, the course is closed until a full inspection can be carried out on Monday,” a post read on Thornhill Golf Club’s Facebook page.

“An update will be posted after this inspection. Stay safe everyone.”

John Mair, the Senior Greenkeeper at Thornhill, a now 18-hole golf course founded in 1893, revealed pictures of the initial extent of the damage.

He told bunkered.co.uk that several trees have fallen at a time when the club prepares for the new season.

“[They] will take a fair amount of time to clear,” he said, “especially now it’s the turn of the year.

“There is always going to be cost involved with these things. One green is damaged from three trees falling on it.”

Stretching to just over 6,100 yards, Thornhill is said to boast some of the best golf course views in Scotland from the village of Mid Nithsdale.

Meanwhile, Sky Sports presenter Andrew Coltart is among the former members who have gone on to enjoy success in the professional game.
