The Tartan Pro Tour is the latest circuit to have its application for world ranking points approved by the OWGR.

The tour, the brainchild of 1999 Open champion Paul Lawrie, will now be included into the world rankings system with immediate effect.

That means points will be given for the Montrose Links Masters presented by Gym Rental Company which was staged at the Angus course this week.

Former Open silver medalist Sam Locke edged out Greg Dalziel in a playoff to take the title after both had finished the 36-hole event tied on seven-under-par.

Launched in 2020 during the Covid pandemic, primarily to give UK-based professionals playing opportunities following the cancellation of the PGA EuroPro Tour season the same year, the Scottish-based circuit provides a stepping-stone for tour pros to progress to the Challenge Tour and DP World Tour.

It became an official feeder tour to the Challenge Tour last year, with status on European golf’s second tier given to the leading player on the Order of Merit at the end of the season.

In December 2023, it was announced that the number of Challenge Tour cards available from the Tartan Pro Tour Order of Merit would be doubled to two this season.

There are 15 events on the 2024 schedule, which concludes with the Tour Championship at Trump International Golf Links Scotland, just outside Aberdeen, in October.

In a statement, OWGR chairman Peter Dawson said: “It is a great pleasure to welcome the Tartan Pro Tour to the family of OWGR Eligible Golf Tours.

“The tour will play a significant role in providing competitive opportunities and career pathways for aspiring players”.

It is understood that the Tartan Pro Tour’s application was a 16-month process, and comes hot on the heels of another UK-based feeder circuit, the Clutch Pro Tour, successfully passing the OWGR’s vetting process.
