One of the highlights of any trip to the Open is a trip to the merchandise tent.

Containing all the polo shirts, hats, ball markers and tees you could wish for, it’s a haven for golf gift connoisseurs.

But this vast structure next to the 16th fairway – think less tent, more portable shopping centre – also has many more unusual items.

It’s already proved hugely popular with the punters.

“A lot of people have gone daft,” one worker tells us.

“The most one person has spent was £6,000. They bought pretty much everything but, in particular, water bottles. Another guy spent £4,500 just on clothes.”

We went hunting for the most weird and wonderful purchases, and this is what we found.
