The PGA Tour’s West Coast swing gets underway in California at the American Express this week.

But golf fans won’t see world No.1 Scottie Scheffler or world No.2 Xander Schauffele in action.

Scheffler, 28, suffered a freak injury on Christmas Day and was forced to delay his comeback and give his hand more time to heal.

Meanwhile, Schauffele withdrew from the event on Monday on medical grounds.

A stacked field will contest the tournament, however, with Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay among those in the lineup.

They will tee it up over three venues, while the action will conclude at La Quinta Country Club on Sunday.

Nick Dunlap sealed a historic win at the venue last year when he became the first amateur to win on the PGA Tour since Phil Mickelson in 1991.

The American Express betting tips

Here’s how the field is priced by bookmakers…

Sungjae Im 12/1

Justin Thomas 12/1

Patrick Cantlay 16/1

Sam Burns 16/1

Tony Finau 25/1

Tom Kim 28/1

The bunkered Bet

Sam Burns 16/1

Low scores will be flowing in California and Sam Burns is the type who will be able to keep with the pace. After an opening 72 at Kapalua two weeks ago, he rallied to a T8 finish and has stacks of form in this event. Two T6s, a T11 and a T18 in five starts here make him a value favourite.
